Greater Love Hath No man

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Than that of one who would, of his own volition, remove his appendage in protest when his family refused him permission to marry a girl of a lower class.

Read all about it here.

Makes me REAL uncomfortable.

GAME ON!

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Okay, you poker fiends out there (and I *know* there are some!), the WSOP 2009 is now in session at the Rio in Vegas.

The schedule for the granddaddy of all poker tournaments is here.

One neat twist, since this is the 40th anniversary of the WSOP is a VERY special tournament open to the 27 living past champions.  What does the winner of this special tournament get?

  • A vintage 1970 c0rvette
  • The Binion Cup, honoring the Binion family that started the WSOP
  • Big time bragging rights.

My money’s on Doyle, as always. *grin*

Another interesting twist is that, in all games, the players start out with three times the amount of their buy-in.  There is a very special tournament that has a buy-in of $40,000, in honor of the 40th anniversary.

The only event that has a higher buy-in is the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. tournament.

It will be on ESPN later on this year.

But, if you want to keep tabs on what’s happening, check out the official site.

EDIT: The official schedule of games and results is HERE!

More fun!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Well, this time it’s Cicero (surprise!) in the crosshairs of a federal investigation and indictments.

Apparently, there was a crime ring running in Cicero and Berwyn that pulled off jewelry thefts, buying and selling stolen goods and operating illegal gambling operations.

More information here!

Good Grief!

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Are people this stupid or don’t they realize that if you’re an elected official, the Feds could be very well checking up on you?

Ald. Ike Carruthers of the 29th Ward, was indicted along with developer Calvin Boender.  The charges: Carrathurs accepted $40.000 in imporvements to this residence along with trips and sporting event tickets in exchange for his backing aproject of Boender’s.

Wotta idiot!

And speaking of idiots, Carlos Zambrano got a 6 game suspension for bumping umpire Mark Carlson as well as throwing his glove atthe dugout fence, throwing the ball into left field and then demolishing the Gatorade dispenser in the dugout.  Still, he’ll only miss one start, but it’s gonna cost him money, as well as a long chat with manager Lou Pinella.

Stupid Criminal Tricks

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

A woman in Arnold, Mo. was arrested for shoplifting when she was slow in figuring out that she was trying to get out an automatic enter door and quite loud in expressing her frustration. (From News of the Weird and KSDK, St. Louis)

A guy named Nathaniel Johnson was arrested in March in Tampa, Fl. on burglary charges when the police had evidence of his presence in a neighborhood that was having a rash of break-ins.  The evidence?  He was wearing an ankle monitor from a previous arrest! (From News of the Weird and WFTS, Tampa)

It it Stacy? or is it Lisa?

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The Ill. State Police recovered a body from the Des Plaines River on Wednesday.  Unfortunately, the autopsy couldn’t determine a lot so they have to wait for DNA tests to be completed.

Yesterday, there was more evidence recovered from the river.

Have you been “cloned”?

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

There is a new criminal enterprise going on these days.  It’s cloning cars.

Here’s an article in the Chicago Sun Times about one man’s experience with this.

An era ends in Chicago

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Yesterday, at 9 AM, an era ended on Chicago radio.

That was when Kathy O’Malley and Judy Markey made the announcement that WGN had cancelled their show and that yesterday’s show would be the last one.

They have known about this for about three weeks, so their producer, Beth Swersk, put together a three-hour retrospective on the show.  What I could listen to of it, it was great.  The three hours of the show are available on http://wgnradio.com.

This is just another sign of how competitive Chicago radio has become.

Also changing yesterday was WNUA, the “Smooth Jazz”  station flipped formats to Spanish.  That change happened at 9 AM as well.

I wonder what’s next?
